Volunteer of the Year 2015

ELSIE J. BROWN
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD
2015

It is my great privilege to announce that MALCOLM CAMERON has been chosen for the ninth annual Elsie J. Brown Volunteer of the Year award for 2015.

If you have spent any amount of time with Mal, you are aware of his passion for astronomy. He has presented programs on amateur stargazing and the Hubble telescope here. Several years ago he presented a lending telescope to our town library which citizens of Deerfield may check out with their library card for a week at a time.

Mal has served as a library trustee for the past three years. He agreed to be our chairman last year and recently was re-elected for another term as trustee and agreed to chair this valuable committee once again! With preservation of the historic nature of our building as our goal, the rehabilitation project restoring the foundation and retaining walls required extensive research of historic preservation practices. Mal worked closely and tirelessly with library trustees, the Board of Selectmen, the town engineer, and the town administrator in addition to the chosen contractor to ensure our project was under budget and successfully completed in time for our Old Home Day celebration.

2014 marked the centennial of the Soldiers Memorial Building in which the Philbrick-James Library resides. Mal Cameron was the dapper and quintessential master of ceremonies for this festive lawn party in our lovely new friendship garden located at the rear of the library.

Mal faithfully attends trustees meetings as well as yearly NH Library Trustee conferences. He took the initiative last year to invite members of NHLTA to our centennial celebration. They were favorably impressed with our gathering and our newly refurbished building! Mal also wrote a wonderful article for that same organization’s newsletter. Mal is a tireless and positive advocate for the library. His upbeat outlook is valued by his co-trustees who nominated him for this year’s award.

Thank you, Mal, for all you have accomplished in your volunteer service to your community and especially the Philbrick-James Library. Keep up the superior work!
