~ Welcome to Deerfield's Public Library ~ |
Libraries throughout the state of New Hampshire offer a variety of entertainment and educational materials to taxpayers at a very economical rate.
The average New Hampshire taxpayer contributes about $33 in taxes per year to fund public libraries and their services.1 But how much would they need to pay out-of-pocket if they purchased their books, movies and other library services in stores?

Seeking Nominations for Library Volunteer Award
The annual Elsie J. Brown Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes an individual who is an outstanding and committed Philbrick James Library volunteer. The award is made possible through donations from the family of Elsie Brown who was just such a volunteer at the library for many, many years.
Have you seen someone quietly helping in our library?--Maybe working in the garden or putting books away? Creating a new bulletin board design or helping out at our fund raising events? Perhaps serving as a trustee or sorting books?
Nomination forms are available at the library and any Deerfield resident may fill out the form nominating a deserving volunteer. Please join us in honoring one of our faithful volunteers. Nominations are due by: Friday, March 16, 2012. A review panel of two members of the Friends of the Library, one librarian and one trustee will consider all applications. The award will be presented during National Library Week, on Saturday, April 21st at 9:30 AM at the library.
Remember to drop off your nominations at the town library or send to Evelyn DeCota, 4 Church Street, Deerfield, NH 03037 by March 16 th.

Sara Kjendal Volunteer of the Year 2011
It is our great pleasure to announce that SARA KJENDAL has been chosen for the fifth annual Elsie Brown Volunteer of the Year award for 2011. Here are some of the reasons cited in the nominations submitted on her behalf.
Sara is a community treasure. She goes the distance, pulls her weight and is always making thoughtful gestures such as playing piano or singing with Alzheimer patients at the Inn at Deerfield, making stunning bouquets for senior luncheon and then stopping by the town library to share them with our patrons!
Sara is also one of the gardeners who cares for the small gardens scattered around town. You will see her in her pretty straw hat, lugging jugs of water to nourish these lovely spots which beautify our community. Sara and several other Friends were responsible for the beautiful perennial garden that borders the library’s front walk.
More specifically, several years ago when interest in the Friends of the Library had waned, Sara offered to become the chairman, but with one big difference: each member was responsible for one fundraiser and/or event. This was key for a small organization of volunteers. Everyone was willing to do something, but no one was interested in doing it all. Sara’s leadership as chairman has led to an active and viable group again. (Please feel free to volunteer your special talents to this group. They are always looking for new members! They meet four times a year on the first Thursday of January, March, June, and October.)
Sara is a regular monthly volunteer and a willing substitute for others. If she sees a job which needs to be done, she either willingly does it herself or finds someone who will.
Sara is compassionate, thoughtful and a shining example of volunteer spirit!
Sara is known as an extraordinary baker. She is one of the pie baking queens at the annual Friends of the Library pie sale. She is greatly appreciated at the senior luncheons for her desserts and her Christmas cookie plates are extraordinary!
Sara is active in the library book group and always has a well-considered opinion.
With this knowledge at our disposal, the committee chose to honor Sara Kjendal as our Elsie Brown Volunteer of the Year for 2011.
Thank you, Sara, for sharing your incredible talents with all of us in Deerfield. Under your leadership, the Friends of the Library has grown…and will continue to grow.
We salute you!
