Historic Barns

Barns are an integral part of Deerfield's historic past. In an effort to encourage preservation of its agricultural heritage, in 2002 the State of New Hampshire enacted RSA 79-D authorizing cities and towns to grant property tax relief to barn owners who can demonstrate a public benefit to be derived from preservation of the structure, and who commit to its maintenance, while under a preservation easement, for a period of 10 years. By doing so the State hoped to alleviate the adverse impacts improvements to the structures might otherwise have on the buildings' assessments.

The deadline for applications (Form PA 36-A) is April 15th. You may also find the two links to The NH Preservation Alliance especially interesting as well as a fine resource for those of you fortunate enough to have a "piece of history" in your back yard!
